The Workshop and Loft Gallery

A showcase for the very best of Orcadian art and crafts

A showcase for the very best of Orcadian art and crafts, the Workshop and Loft Gallery is something of a hidden gem, nestled away within the narrow seafront streets of St Margaret’s Hope.

Established as a cooperative in 1978 for the benefit of local craftspeople, the Workshop remains dedicated to supporting island artisans, acting as retail outlet for a remarkably varied range of handcrafted goods.

Unique, high-quality knitwear is the Workshop’s speciality. It’s all hand made in Orkney using beautiful yarns, including North Ronaldsay, Shetland and Icelandic Lopi wools, with designs that merge traditional skills with contemporary, on-trend colour schemes and styles. You’ll not find the Workshop’s knitwear anywhere else, which is just one of the reasons the shop’s become so popular with visitors and locals alike.

In addition to knitwear, the Workshop’s Front Road premises contain an impressive selection of jewellery, ceramics, textiles, prints, photographs and cards. The staff – made up of cooperative members - are a friendly bunch too. Upstairs you’ll discover the wonderfully intimate, yet bright and airy, Loft Gallery, which plays host to a fantastic programme of exhibitions covering all artistic genres.
